80% of us at some point will suffer from low back pain. It is in the top 3 causes of time off work and visits to the doctor.

Three common contributors to causing back pain are:

  1. Sitting in a slumped posture.
  2. Bending and lifting without a straight back.
  3. Weakness due to sedantry lifestyle.

At Optimus we spend a lot of time managing patients in a lot of pain.

Generally the best advice for most conditions is:

  • Ice the painful area with a covered (tea towel ideal) ice pack for 10 minutes 3 times a day.
  • Gently movement is better than immobility.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting especially cars and soft sofas - higher seating is better.
  • Consult your pharmacist or GP regarding anti-inflammatory medication.
  • Prolonged or recurrent pain is nearly always due to damage to the ligaments or discs of the spine.
