6 marketing mistakes that you must avoid

14/09/2016

Marketing is more than just words and emails; there are techniques to develop and lessons to unearth. The process takes time, and most - if not all - marketers will admit the learning never stops. However, there are a few simple things you can do to avoid making basic errors.

1. Targeting the many rather than the few

This may sound counter-intuitive, but the key to marketing success is reaching the people that will actually interact with your business or product. It is far better to reach 10 people that you can subsequently deal with rather than 100 who will delete your message without a second glance.

2. Failing to harness social media

Social media is an easy way to get your message out in the ether immediately. By using hashtags and keywords you can reach people quickly and easily - and, best of all, it’s free. Getting to grips with social media is a marketing must.

3. Ignoring results

Check the analytics! Look at open rates and the number of clicks your content receives and make the most of that data. There is no point creating finely crafted content if nobody is going to read it. Look at what works and build on those foundations.

4. Not listening to your audience

Don’t just listen to your audience, but take advantage of what they say. Even the best marketers don’t get everything right the first time; take on board any and all feedback and at the very least jot it down. Reject comments at your peril!

5. Failing to pay attention to the little details

Take time over every piece of marketing content you produce. Spellings, getting people’s names correct and layout can easily be overlooked. Take into account the small particulars, because people remember errors, and they don’t recall them with fondness.

6. Not committing to visuals

Coloured visuals increase people’s willingness to read a piece of content by 80%, while images are more than 40 times more likely to be shared on social media than other kinds of content. Research suggests that articles containing an image once every 75 to 100 words get double the number of total shares than articles with fewer images. Put simply, people want to be able to see your message.
