Top qualities to look for in a tradesperson

01/09/2017

It is not always easy to find a good tradesperson. You may have been burned in the past by a cowboy or you may be reluctant to just go on other people’s opinions. Depending on the work you are looking to get done, the value could be high, so it is important to hire someone who is right for the job. If you want to ensure you make the right choice, there are some qualities you should look out for when deciding on the best person for the job.

Professionalism

It can be quite easy to differentiate between a professional tradesperson and a cowboy builder – and it comes down to their initial interactions. If you speak to the tradesperson and they take the time to understand your needs and offer good communication, this is a great start. However, if they fail to return your call or you feel they don’t really care about your needs, it’s best to keep looking.

Attitude

What is the general feeling from their attitude to your query? Do you feel that they are annoyed by your call? Are they keen to get you off the phone? If any of these ring true, it might be best giving this tradesperson a body swerve!

Reputation

These days, it is quite easy to find out information on any business – all you need to do is look for reviews or ask around. If you find that the tradesperson has a bit of a dodgy reputation or you can’t find anyone they’ve previously worked with, it is not a great sign to start off with.

Portfolio

Depending on the type of work you need undertaking, your tradesperson should be able to produce a portfolio of their work so you can check the standard is right for you. If they can’t provide this - they should be able to - it may not be worth taking the risk, especially if it’s a high-value job.

Passion

Regardless of the work you need undertaking, you should recognise some kind of passion for the job with your tradesperson. If they don’t seem to enjoy what they’re doing or they seem unmotivated, they might not do it to a good standard or worse still, they may not even finish the job. The passion they have is a good indicator of whether they will be right for the job.
