Geotechnical evaluation can be considered as a crucial step in the preparatory phase of any construction project. It involves assessing the suitability of the land or soil on which a structure is to be built, as well as identifying any necessary remedial measures that may be required.
As structural engineers, Perry Testing Ltd offer a wide range of in-situ construction testing services, which can be completed without any significant interruption to your project timeline or budget. Our team of experienced engineers can assist you in determining the specific tests that are required for your project, and we can provide you with immediate, on-site reports.
California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test
One of the tests we offer is the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test, which measures the strength of soil under the stress of wheel loads. This test, as per BS1377: Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes: Part 9, is used for determining the thickness of materials required for building pavements and roads. We use a plunger to measure the pressure required to penetrate the soil, and the results can be provided to you instantly.
Incremental Plate Load test
Another test we offer is the Incremental Plate Load test, which is used to determine the weight-bearing capabilities of a surface or material. This test is typically performed before heavy machinery is brought to the site, to ensure that the surface is safe for crane and pile mats. We adhere to BS 1377: Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes when conducting these tests, to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met.
Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing
We also offer Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, which is used to assess the stiffness and condition of pavements and roads. This test uses a Dynamic Core Penetrometer to determine the CBR value and check the thickness and location of underlying soil. Like other tests, it can be performed in-situ with an immediate report and no downtime required.
Hand Shear Vane test
Our Hand Shear Vane test is used to evaluate the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils. Our engineers use a hand-held instrument to conduct this test and can provide instant, on-site reports. The results can be presented in either Kn/M², or we can use BS 1377 calculations to provide vane shear strength.
Sand Replacement Density and Core Cutter Density testing
Lastly, we offer Sand Replacement Density and Core Cutter Density testing. These tests are used for measuring the density of natural soils or imported materials, and are typically used in the construction of pavements and roads to determine the degree of compaction required. We follow the testing procedure outlined in BS 1377: Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes: Part 9, to ensure that everything is as it should be before the final layers are laid.
